    What will you learn?
    Owners and users of buildings need to make informed decisions about the purchase of equipment and materials. Although initial capital cost is often the key criteria, ongoing costs should also be considered to achieve the best outcome. Life cycle costing is a method of identifying and calculating all the costs (current and future) over the life of an asset.

  • provides an overview of LCC methodology

  • clarifies the use of Net Present Value (NPV) to calculate future cash flows

  • discusses discount rates, and their effects on a LCC analysis

  • provides examples of how LCC can be used in decision making for buildings.

    Andrew Carre's qualifications include a Bachelor of Economics (Monash), Bachelor of Engineering - Mechanical (Monash) and a Masters of Engineering - Sustainable Energy (RMIT)

    Andrew has 12 years industry experience in the automotive sector. He has spent a large part of his career working in the field of corporate finance both locally and overseas. As an engineer he has worked in the field of automotive design and development.

    Within the finance discipline he has developed and assessed capital projects, been responsible for company valuations, implemented joint venture restructuring projects, and has managed the financial activities of Holden's engine operations in Port Melbourne as unit controller.

    In recent years he has worked at the Centre for Design in the field of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA), spanning a wide range of public and private sector projects.

    Andrew assisted with the development and facilitation of the CRC's November 2007 Developing the Business Case Workshops conducted in Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane. Content included financial valuation techniques and how sustainability influences financial outcomes.

    Recent projects completed include: Packaging Impact Quick Evaluation Tool (PIQET); Comparative LCA of timber powder coating products; LCA of biosolid disposal options;. Business case for sustainability in commercial buildings; Energy efficiency of Melbourne's tram network; LCA of biosolid disposal options.
